How it's done:
Either a heavy paper is used or a unique
canvas cloth (which shows somewhat grainy
in the photos using canvas).  The paper
allows for more painting detail, but the
canvas looks a little richer.
The image is decoupaged onto the pin and
then painted in minimal 3D and regular paint
with black ink accents, then varnished.
 A brass heart charm is usually added to
the dog's color.  

Any dog image from one of my switch plate
designs can be used to create a dog portrait pin.
