Handcrafted and hand painted porcelain earrings
PORCELAIN JEWELRY
By Jean B. Fitzgerald
| This handcrafted porcelain jewelry started out as a big chunk of porcelain clay which is then rolled out into a thin layer with a rolling pin. For the earrings I used various sizes of tops from things like perfume bottles and a seasoned salt top to cut out the forms into various sizes. About a day later the porcelain forms are dried out enough to hand finish using a paring knife before putting into a small kiln to fire. When they're done being fired, the sorting begins, trying to pair them up. Depending on where they were in the kiln has to do with how much they shrink in the firing process and the number of sizes can be daunting. Part of their handcrafted appeal is that they are not completely uniform. They are then hand painted (no stencils are used) and they are mirror images of each other. Varnish comes next and of course the application of hypoallergenic posts or fishhooks for dangles. Accents such as gold foil, brass charms, or rhinestones may be used. |
All are pierced
earrings with hypoallergenic posts except
the oblong ones that have hypoallergenic fishhook attachments.
